- Title: Siobhan Davies Commissions
- Date: 4th November 2011
- Summary: Siobhan Davies curated four new commissions by dance artists working together with artists from other disciplines. With works ranging from performance to installation and film, Siobhan Davies Commissions investigates the meeting of practices. By bringing choreographic practice and visual practice into contact with each other, and by stirring together different ways of creating, two distinct practices can be brought together to create an encounter of an entirely different kind. These encounters were presented at Bargehouse on London’s South Bank, in November 2011. The commissioned artists are Henry Montes, Sarah Warsop, Gill Clarke and Deborah Saxon, who were partnered respectively with Marcus Coates, Tracey Rowledge and Lucy Skaer. Deborah Saxon and Henry Montes also created a piece with Bruce Sharp. - Analysis: ‘The Commissions were triggered by a simple desire to develop a working relationship with four performer/makers who have meant so much to me and my own choreographic work, Gill Clarke, Henry Montes, Deborah Saxon and Sarah Warsop. It felt exactly the right moment to continue my recent practice of giving time and situation to artists from different disciplines to reveal their own thinking and reach into each other’s practice. I hoped to encourage an environment where each of them could make real to the other what truly matters to them; to articulate the stuff of what they do, make and present so that they might evolve their own practice through these partnerships but not lose any of their particularity. By simply having a strong and mutual reason to work side by side, opportunities arose to observe or speak about how we search, pick over, manipulate and edit material which has resulted in the unexpected but wonderfully varied work in these commissions.’
